Most of us like to spend time imagining what it will be like when we finally get that promotion, that dream job, when we finally get our lucky break, or when people finally recognize how amazingly talented and wonderful we are.  But a truer measure of character and worth is how we act when we are given work that is hard, tedious, unglamorous, and unnoticed.
 ====The Reward====
 As he talked with them, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him. 24 All the Israelites, when they saw the man, fled from him and were very much afraid. 25 The Israelites said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. The king will greatly enrich the man who kills him, and will give him his daughter and make his family free in Israel.” 26 David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 27 The people answered him in the same way, “So shall it be done for the man who kills him.”

 On the first day of my Introduction to Preaching class in seminary, a wise professor told the class that the best thing a young preacher could hope to do in a sermon was to "let the scripture do most of the talking, and let the preacher stay mostly out of the way."
 I'm going to attempt to do exactly that today.  Our scripture passage is 1 Samuel 17, the entire chapter, and it's not short.  But it is familiar.  It is the story of David and Goliath, the one story from the Bible that everyone has heard, that everyone knows.  Or do we?  I invite you to listen to the story again today with fresh ears.

+*In all the eye-popping description of Goliath, there's one little word that fascinates me most, and it's in verse 4: "And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath.  Champion.  In English that comes from the same root as the word camp, and has a military connotation--a trained fighter.  But in Hebrew it's actually a short little phrase:  אִֽישׁ־הַבֵּנַ֙יִם֙ (ish-ha-benayim).  It literally means "the man in between" or "the man in the middle."  Goliath is the one who stands in between his people and their enemies, and this is actually an attempt to spare lives.

-*We want to be the "lucky" underdogs, the lottery winners. But David is diligent in the details, master of the mundane.
+*Funny thing about Americans:  We love the underdog.  It's funny because we also happen to be the wealthiest, most powerful country in the history of this planet.  We love to watch movies about underdogs that are made by large multi-billion dollar corporate film studios, and we love to root for the underdog professional sports team where the second-string underdog rookie quarterback is paid more than most of us will ever see in our lifetimes.  We root for David, but really we spend most of our time and energy trying to be like Goliath.
 ====The Reward====

 *David is not without ambition: What's in it for me?  The other Israelites are clearly lacking in ambition. But David's personal ambition is also tempered by his zeal for God & country.

 *Know thyself: David is not Saul, and he is not Goliath. He's comfortable in his own skin, with his own gifts and resources. How many of us go through life trying to wear someone else's armor, trying to live up to someone else's expectations?

		+	41 The Philistine came on and drew near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him. 42 When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was only a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. 43 The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the wild animals of the field.” 45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This very day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head; and I will give the dead bodies of the Philistine army this very day to the birds of the air and to the wild animals of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord does not save by sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and he will give you into our hand.”
