Three Minute Film Summary

Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio is based on the classic Italian children's story Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, first published in 1883. It is the third most translated book in the world, and has been adapted countless times in print, for the stage, and for the screen. If you grew up with Walt Disney's famous animated adaptation...this is not that story, although they both share a common source.

Nevertheless, if you know that story (and most of you do) you're at least familiar with the basic outline. In this version, Geppetto has a son named Carlo, who is tragically killed, and Geppetto carves Pinocchio one night in a fit of drunken grief. The blue fairy brings Pinocchio to life, recruits Sebastian J. Cricket to be his conscience, and all sorts of adventures follow, as Pinocchio and all of the other characters embark on a journey to discover what it means to be free, to be enslaved, to be obedient, or disobedient, to be rejected, loved, and ultimately, what it means to be truly human.

Imperfection

The film begins and ends with the image of a perfect pinecone.

Preparation

Matthew 3:1-3. In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, 2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’ ”

Incarnation

Revelation 4:6-8. And in front of the throne there is something like a sea of glass, like crystal. Around the throne, and on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and back: 7 the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with a face like a human, and the fourth living creature like a flying eagle. 8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and inside. Day and night without ceasing they sing, “Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God the Almighty, who was and is and is to come.”

Education

Luke 2:46-49. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents[j] saw him they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Child, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously looking for you.” 49 He said to them, “Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

Temptation

Matthew 4:8-11. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, 9 and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’ ”11 Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

Crucifixion

Philippians 2:5-8. Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, assuming human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross.

Resurrection

Matthew 12:38-40. Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth.
